Our story began on stage…

Kai and Sophia first met through their shared love of theater. At the time, Kai had recently left Los Angeles and moved to Oregon during the pandemic, while Sophia was also returning to the stage in her hometown of Portland as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde - The Musical.

Although Kai never performed opposite Sophia in the role he understudied (ironically, as her unassuming love interest), a deep friendship quickly took center stage.
Friends noticed. Parents noticed. Eventually, Kai and Sophia noticed too.

What began as friendship became something neither could imagine living without.

The Proposal

In November 2025, they set off on a nine-day journey around Iceland’s Ring Road. On the morning of Sophia’s birthday, they stood together beside Glacier Lagoon, watching icebergs drift silently across the water before making their way to nearby Diamond Beach.

There, surrounded by black volcanic sand and crystal-blue ice, Kai asked Sophia to become his forever travel partner.

The moment felt fitting in more ways than one. Years earlier, while they were still just friends, Sophia had mentioned her dream ring: a black diamond. Kai remembered. And on one of the most beautiful black sand beaches in the world, that memory became a promise.

FAQs

How fun! Can I bring a plus one?

Due to the intimate nature of our celebration, we are only able to accommodate those specifically named on the invitation. We kindly ask that unlisted guests and plus-ones not attend.

Are children invited?

While we love your kiddos, to preserve the intimate nature of our day and give hardworking parents a night off, we ask that they not attend any wedding-related events. The Fairmont Orchid, however, has fabulous childcare options during the day, and in-room nanny services after hours with experienced and vetted professionals. If you wish to bring children to turn your trip into a longer stay, we ask that you coordinate childcare on your own.

Is there a registry?

In short, no. Your presence is the only gift we need! We feel strongly we’d rather you spend your hard earned money on your Hawaiian vacation than things for us.

However, since we know some of you will want to give a gift anyway, we have created a Honeymoon Fund. That way, if you feel you must give something, it goes back into the thing we love so much: travel!

Do I have to stay at the Fairmont Orchid?

Not at all. Guests are welcome to stay wherever they feel most comfortable. We’ve secured discounted rooms at the Fairmont Orchid and will also provide recommendations for nearby hotels, vacation rentals, and alternative accommodations.

If you do choose to stay with us, you can use the discount code 2U8NHM through their website for 40% off!

Is there a benefit to staying at the host hotel?

Yes! Beyond the 40% discount, the hotel provides a variety of complimentary & paid activity options across property. We recommend those staying onsite take advantage of their daily free hour of snorkeling. And if you sign up for Fairmont rewards when lounging by the pool… be sure to grab your coupon for a free cocktail! The Fairmont Orchid also features multiple, highly recommended restaurants known for island flair. Reservations can be made through the concierge.

What if I can't attend?

We completely understand. Hawaiʻi is a significant trip, and there is absolutely no expectation that anyone travel on our behalf. If attending isn’t the right fit, please know we are grateful for your love and support regardless.

What should I wear to a Hawaiian wedding?

We want you to be comfortable!

Think elevated island / resort wear—polished, colorful, and comfortable. It will be warm during the day and cool off after sunset, so we recommend lightweight fabrics like linen, cotton, silk, or breezy blends. Sundresses, midi and maxi dresses, jumpsuits, dressy separates, linen suits, sport coats, dress shirts, slacks, and loafers are all great choices. Ties and jackets are optional. We encourage guests to embrace our tropical-inspired color palette and kindly ask that you avoid white, ivory, and cream.

Why Hawaiʻi?

Hawaiʻi feels like a full-circle chapter of our story.

It is a place deeply connected to both of our lives. Sophia grew up visiting the islands with family, while Kai’s parents loved Hawaiʻi so much that they borrowed a Hawaiian name for their future son.

Earlier this year, Sophia brought Kai to the Big Island for his birthday. Within a day, we were completely captivated.

The sunsets. The ocean. The volcanic landscapes. The slower pace of life.

Then, entirely by accident, we stopped to tour a wedding venue “just to look.”

The rest is history.
